Seasonal Influences
Celebrate the New Season at Pettengill Farm

Fall is a magical time, what with the picturesque foliage, delicious apples fresh from the orchard, and the anticipation of the holidays. But Pettengill Farm in Salisbury, Mass. wants you to celebrate autumn in the garden this September. Their second annual Fall Garden Celebration is sure to inspire you not to pack away those gloves and trowels just yet.

Pettengill Farm has been a family business since 1790, and is currently owned by Jan Pettengill Richenburg, who is passionate about educating both the novice and experienced gardener in creating beautiful outdoor spaces. Pettengill Farm has 13 greenhouses that are filled with annuals, perennials, shrubs, and roses in the springtime. Their display gardens let customers see what their home gardens could look like with the right materials.

The farm is the setting for this year's celebration, which Jan is very excited about. "The purpose of the celebration is to educate how tantalizing the fall garden flowers can be," she says. "We are trying to stimulate people to look beyond the mums and not to overlook their garden during the fall when the crispy air makes it fun to be in the garden."

This year, visitors to the event can expect demonstrations from staff members on how to make your garden fabulous, including how to create arrangements with fall flowers and foliage and how to prepare your garden for the winter. Pettengill’s landscape designer will also be on hand to demonstrate how to create a "private oasis" in the garden to enjoy an intimate meal al fresco or just relax without nosy neighbors.

Another event not to miss is the Thrillin' Grillin' cooking class with Pettengill's famous chef Doug Morris, who will be grilling up pizzas using handmade dough and fresh veggies. Ongoing throughout the celebration are plant sales and raffles, as well as painters and sculptors making art en plein air.

The event is free, and will take place rain or shine on Saturday, September 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Contact Pettengill Farm for more information at 978 462-3675 or www.pettengillfarm.com.
